Chief of Police

The Chief of Police is responsible directly to the Mayor for the management and operation of the Police Department. These duties include continuous review with his staff about day-to-day activities within the department. The Chief is responsible for the short and long-term planning to ensure continued and effective police services. Under these guidelines come personnel evaluations, recruitment, and coordination of police services within the framework of the City government, as well as outside law enforcement and private agencies.

The year of 2007, the Office of the Chief of Police administered a budget of $5,989,500.00, as approved by the City Council. This appropriation increased slightly from fiscal 2006, the accompanying chart illustrates that nearly eighty five percent of the police budget is committed to personnel costs. The department employs fiftythree (53) commissioned police officers and twenty (20) full or part time civilians.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Chief must continually monitor scheduling of personnel to assure adequate staffing so that maximum efficiency is maintained in the areas of patrol and criminal investigative services.
