Introduction
Traditionally, law enforcement agencies in the United States share one common goal: TO PROTECT LIFE, PRESERVE THE PEACE, AND TO PROTECT PROPERTY. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the Bridgeton Police Department to translate this mandate into service that promotes the general welfare of the community.
Consequently, modern application of this injunction has brought the realization to both law enforcement officials and the community itself that the conventional means of the delivering of services and enforcement of the laws are no longer the most effective means to accomplish the goal. It is becoming more apparent with each passing year that, along with effecting enactments for protection and peace and providing the public with other essential services, police officials must assume another role to accomplish this venture. This has extended the role of police work into the area of educators to the public. The famed motto of police agencies throughout the country has been appended to state: "TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE AND TO EDUCATE"
In order to accomplish these stated goals, the Police Department continues to affect its primary mission. That mission is to remain available at all times, with properly trained and equipped police officers in sufficient numbers, thus enabling effective police protection to citizens, business persons, and visitors to this city. The Police Department has placed in this same solicitude the implementation of new awareness programs and continuance of successfully proven programs designed to educate the people of the City of Bridgeton in effective crime prevention measures and in how to recognize the contributing causes.
To accomplish this mission, the Police Department has established specific entities with defined activities and duties. The entities are the Community Oriented Policing Unit, the Bureau of Operations, and the Bureau of Support Services. Both Bureau Commanders and the Community Oriented Policing Units report their especial ascription and progress directly to the Chief of Police. Constant and on-going communications between each unit constituent and the Chief of Police are a part of every day business. |
